Marketing ME

This has been a long time coming. I have been wanting to share what I have changed in my business to get the better results I’ve been experiencing since July. There is a combination of different factors that led to my productivity. The biggest has been consistency. However, before one can be consistent, one must have tasks to do consistently. I was always stuck about being consistent because I never seemed to have enough leads to work with (or so I thought). There was also the problem of me getting stuck in my own head listening to what some call “the committee” rumbling and grumbling about all that goes wrong and ignores what goes right. Recently, I have quieted that committee and found some confidence in myself and in my business. Know what I did? I figured out how to get leads! (more…)

Great Holiday Booking Idea

By popular demand, I’m sharing this great booking idea for the holiday season! This quarter my unit is doing a really great contest for our customers. It is a calendar model contest. We did this last year in conjunction with Corporate’s national model search. Basically, we are asking women over 18 to enter our local Calendar Girl Face Model Contest. Our goal is to have 200 entrants. From these 200 we will choose 12 to be featured in the calendar. The calendars are desk calendars by Vista Print. We will use one mother/daughter duo for May to honor Mothers’ Day. (more…)

Got Guests?

Since I’ve been on a bit of a hot streak in bringing guests with me to my meetings lately, I thought I would share a little on what I’ve been doing. To be perfectly honest, I’m a little shocked myself. In the past, I have not had this much success in bringing guests. What I’ve been doing differently has made a phenomenal impact on my confirmation and attendance rate.

So what have I been doing? What’s getting these guests here? Who are these guests? Where are these leads coming from? I know, there are so many questions to be answered! In fact, over the years I was asking these very questions to myself as I would watch other members of my unit come week after week with guests while mine were not coming at all or I just had no one to ask. Part of the problem was my own self esteem and confidence. I didn’t really believe that I could find people who wanted to come with me. It was a little deeper than that, though. It was kind of a feeling of why would someone want to be my guest? I was making it very personal which was silly now that I look back on it. By personalizing it, I’m making it about ME. It’s not about me! It’s about them! (more…)

Attracting New Business

This is a sort of continuation of my earlier post on the Scavenger Hunt. In that post I mentioned it was not for me. It was too “Mary Kay Commando” for my taste. The feeling it gave me was uncomfortable. I felt like I was attacking people rather than attracting. There really wasn’t anything attractive about it. Again, don’t get me wrong, if you are a lover of this method of generating leads, go for it. If not, read on. :D (more…)

A Scavenger I Am Not

There is an exercise out there in network marketing called The Scavenger Hunt. It is supposed to be helpful for people like me to come out of our shells and go talk to strangers about our businesses. Last night when I arrived at my weekly meeting, my director informed us that we were going to split into team and do this exercise until 8:00 p.m. while she worked with our guests.

On paper, this sounds like a great idea. For those who are not familiar with it, here is the rundown. Basically, you have a list of people to find. In this case, it’s women because I’m in the cosmetic business. There are items like, “Woman with dark hair;” “Woman with a baby stroller;” “Woman wearing glasses.” You get the idea, right? If not, the sheet looks something like this: (more…)

Booth Set Up

Occasionally, someone finds this site searching the keywords “how to set up a display table” or “what should I put on a display table.” I’ve decided to address that since I did a table event all day today. Our table was simple, but attractive. We had one catalog book placed in a spiral bound display sleeve. I know that sounds weird. These are fabulous and can be purchased at File It Pro. We had my display trays so that people could see the new colors in person. My friend had made up raffle prizes. Ten winners would receive a lipstick and liner (discontinued platinum packaging) in our drawing. I found an old product gift box that worked perfectly as an entry box. We also had two dishes with mints, our door prize grand prize for the event, and a box filled with samples that people could take. (more…)

Power Partners

More and more I am finding it so important to have power partners. I have a few. Some are online power partners while others are people I see in the three dimensional world. :) Both are so important! It is always good to have people build you up when you are feeling weak. This is also why our weekly meetings are so important. The unit should be just that: a unit of support! Going to my meeting lifts me up after a hard day at the office. If something at home is more pressing, I don’t go; but I do try to go every week. (more…)

Lesson Learned

For months I’ve been putting off calling some leads I got at a bride show way back in January. Tonight I finally coughed up the courage to just get on the freakin’ phone! Well, I made five phone calls. The first person I called told me she has a consultant. I know I asked her if she had one when I met her. She said she is surprised she even checked “yes” to a facial! She was very nice. My second call was my most promising. This woman can’t do an appointment now because she is moving. She is having a house built literally around the corner from me. She said a makeup party would be a lot of fun to get people over to her new home when it’s ready. So, she is keeping my number. Of course, I’ll call her in a month or so to follow up. Third, I called the bride who won my gift certificate. Her sister is now a consultant. That’s what I get for freaking out and waiting! I told her to make sure she tries the new minerals! Next, I called another bride who just flat out said she decided on NO MAKEUP for her wedding! What?! Well, at this I decided to call her matron of honor who also entered in my drawing. She was a very made up lady. Not overly done at all, you could just tell that she cares a lot about her appearance. She had a great manicure the day I met her. This woman’s number was disconnected!

So, that was my phone call experience. But, you know what? I’m glad I got on the phone. It showed me some things. (more…)

Makeup Artists for a Day

As promised I am writing about my experience providing makeup for a dance recital. :) What a rewarding experience! The recital was held in the theater where I danced when I was age 6 to 13. I also participated in musical theatre there every summer. It was such a trip down memory lane! It seemed as though nothing had changed in there for 20 years! My high school class also used that stage for graduation since our high school had no auditorium and no air conditioning in the gym. Oh the memories!

There were 5 of us doing the makeup for the girls. This was a good number. There were lots of girls! The age range was 3 to 13! The dance instructors told us most of the girls would be in the basement. Two of us went to the basement, myself included. The youngest dancers were getting ready in the basement. My first makeup recipient was a 3 year old.  She had been overcome with stagefright during rehearsal. Her mom told her she could wear makeup as long as she wouldn’t cry on stage again. She was a doll! (more…)

Bridal Show Results: A Lesson in Numbers Part 1

This afternoon I manned a table at a local bridal show along with three other consultants. I’m taking this opportunity to talk a little bit more about numbers and this business. When I first started talking to the brides and their friends and families it seemed that many of them already had consultants. For the most part, I know the consultants and will contact them to follow up with these customers.

Now that it’s all said and done, I have 36 total leads. That means I talked to 36 actual people between 12:30 and 2:30 today! That’s huge for me! At first I was scared to talk, but as I kept doing it, it became easier for me. It was even fun. :)

So, out of 36 people, how many do you think already have consultants? half? 40%? 10%? The answer is… (more…)
