I happen to be a big fan of TLC’s “What Not to Wear.” This first tip is something I heard from Carmindy, the makeup artist on that show.

If you have a discoloration, flaw, or blemish that you wish to cover up, here is a great tip for foundation application:

    1. Start with concealor on just the flawed area.

    2. Apply Full-Coverage foundation on the blemish area. This is a more opaque formula and adds to the masking of the flaw.

    3. Apply Medium-Coverage Foundation to entire face. This will blend the concealor and Full-Coverage and make your skin tone even.

    4. (optional) Finish with pressed powder or loose powder if desired.

*I do this whenever I’m trying to look my absolute best. It works! I have terrible blemishes on my cheeks and this trick keeps them well hidden. :D

  2. mkrules says:

Thanks! I have tried to do concealer first before but it came off when I did foundation. I bet this way will work since the foundation is layerable. :)

  3. shadesofpink says:

Yea. If your concealor is coming off, wait a few minutes before applying the foundation. If you let it dry, it should stick. :)

  4. mkrules says:

Ok I did this today and IT WORKED. It even stayed on at work when I am running around sweating. :) Yea!

  5. shadesofpink says:

Excellent! So glad it worked for you!

  6. mkrules says:

Yep, and I have only been doing the concealer and one layer of foundation (med coverage). Then powder to set.

Hey do you know if the even complexion essence can help get rid of old reddish acne spots? They are not indented, just red/pinkish marks that are annoying to have to cover.

  7. shadesofpink says:

I don’t know if even complexion essence will help with those. ECE lightens discolorations where melatonin is more prominent creating dark spots. It can also lighten freckles (yay for me!).

As for those reddish acne spots, the Night Solution is great for those. I had those kinds of marks after using another brand and the marks felt rough to the touch. They were indented. When I started using the full Miracle Set, those spots started to lighten up and feel softer! Now, I can only really see them when I have zero makeup on and they are still hard to spot even then. ;)

  8. shadesofpink says:

Oh–but I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to add ECE to the regimen. I use it daily. I do think it has helped to further improve the softness of my skin. :)

Last night at my meeting I got some great training and tips on this fabulous product! The Targeted Action Line Reducer is designed to offer both instant and long-term effects. It plumps the skin in the face where lines occur within 10 minutes and also aids in the disappearance of those lines over time! Amazing! But there are some things you should know:More…

    1. Apply this over moisturizer.

    2. Pat into area–concentrating on getting the product into those tiny little crevasses.

    3. Careful not to apply too much! Too much of this product will cause it to flake once foundation is applied.

Those three steps are the basics. So, some people have a really hard time getting this product to really work to its full potential. Doesn’t it work? Are these ladies applying it incorrectly? NO! Different skin types will absorb it differently. I am one of those people who has a problem with the flaking and seeing few results. Granted, my lines are not real deep; however, less defined lines should become less visible more rapidly than deeper lines. So what do we do? I was using one of those pointed tipped Q-tips to apply it and still got it all wrong. Well, last night I heard a tip and I gave it a try today. What do you know? It worked!

So what’s this big tidbit??? It’s sheer genius I tell you! This is what you do:

    1. On the back of your hand put a dab of Targeted-Action Line Reducer and a dab of Firming Eye Cream.

    2. Blend these together on the back of your hand.

    3. Pat the mixture into desired area. The eye cream will allow the line reducer to absorb into those lines. And you won’t get the flaking!

Voila! I tried this trick today and it looked great!

    Dry Skin Solutions:

Some suggestions for you if you are having similar issues:

    1. Start by eliminating Toners or Fresheners from your routine–or at least cutting use down to once or twice a week, or at night only. These products can really dry out the skin; especially Blemish Control Toner.

    2. If you are used to using Medium Coverage Foundation, try Full Coverage. It contains some extra moisturizer.

    3. Try mixing your foundation with a supplementary moisturizer. If you are normally combination or oily, start by mixing the foundation with Oil Free Hydrating Gel. If the lightweight oil free products aren’t working, try Intense Moisture Cream.

    4. If you are using the Combination/Oily 3-in-1 Cleanser, experiment with the Normal/Dry formula. This may or may not work for you. I tried this last year and broke out. It was too much moisture for me.

  11. shadesofpink says:

    Oily Skin and Powder Foundation:

If you have a tendency toward oily skin, please note that it can affect how your powder foundation looks. The oils in your skin can cause a powder foundation to appear darker than it truly is. To prevent this discoloration, use Beauty Blotters before applying your powder.

  12. Jeni says:

I have some questions , and I do not mean to seem ignorant however, I am!!!! LOL

What is the order of application with the Even Essence, the foundation the highlighter and the concealer? I have asked and asked my former SD, but for my skin , I need in depth detail. I have very dry skin on my lower jaw, my declote’, and around my hairline on my face.

I have very oily skin, and I mean oily on my nose, and semi-oily on my chin and forehead. Please shades, can you help?

I would greatly appreciate the advise.

    your sister in MK, Jeni

  13. Jeni says:

oops, also , I have HUGE pores on my nose, chin near my eyes ( by the nose ) and large pores on my forehead. I was in an auto accident 25 years ago, and my head and face went thru the windshield. Ever since that time, my pores seem to be uncontorllably large. What to do???

    Jeni

  14. shadesofpink says:

Hi Jeni! Good to see you here. :)

I’ll approach order of application first:

Even Complexion Essence is applied immediately after cleansing (or, after toner if you use it). If you use Microderm, you would apply Step 2 of Micro before applying Even Complexion Essence. If you are using liquid foundation, it goes on before the highlighting pen. If you are using mineral powder foundation, it should be applied after the highlighting pen. Confused yet? :) Concealer can go on either before or after liquid foundation (I prefer before); it should always be applied before mineral powder. Perhaps I can do a list:

    Order of Application(Using liquid foundation):

    1. Cleanser

    2. Microderm Step 1

    3. Acne treatment/Toner (not advisable with Microderm)

    4. Microderm Step 2

    5. Even Complexion Essence

    6. Day Solution

    7. Age-Fighting Moisturizer

    8. Targeted-Action Eye Revitalizer

    9. Firming Eye Cream/Age-Fighting Eye Cream

    10. Concealer

    11. Foundation

    12. Highlighting Pen

Order of Application(Using Mineral Powder Foundation):

    1. Cleanser

    2. Microderm Step 1

    3. Acne treatment/Toner (not advisable with Microderm)

    4. Microderm Step 2

    5. Even Complexion Essence

    6. Day Solution

    7. Age-Fighting Moisturizer

    8. Targeted-Action Eye Revitalizer

    9. Firming Eye Cream/Age-Fighting Eye Cream

    10. Concealer

    11. Highlighting Pen

    12. Mineral Powder Foundation

I hope this helps. If I’ve listed products you don’t currently use, simply skip to the next product you do use. ;)

  15. shadesofpink says:

Sorry to hear about your car accident, too, Jeni. I realize it was a long time ago. Happy you are hear to tell about it. The director from whom I receive most of my product training went through a windshield years ago. She swears the Night Solution aided in reducing the appearance of scars. Looking at her now you would never know she was in an accident.

As for the reduction of pores, the Hydrating Freshener (Formula 1 in Classic Basic) will minimize the appearance of pores. I believe the Night Solution also aids in minimization of pores.

As for your combination skin issues, it may take some experimentation, but I do know Advanced Moisture Renewal is helpful with dryness on the throat area. If that is too intense of a moisturizer, then use Intense Moisturizing Cream. I would also recommend Intense Moisturizing Cream on your hairline. If that is too much moisture, use Oil Free Hydrating Gel.

To control oiliness everywhere else, I would recommend Purifying Freshener (formula 2 Classic Basic). Purifying Freshener controls oily build up. If you are extremely oily, use Blemish Control Toner (Formula 3) once or twice a week.

Like you I have combination skin. It is extremely oily in some areas and very dry in others and weather always plays a role! I just kind of play around with what I’ve got and see what works and what doesn’t. Good luck with you skin. I hope something I’ve suggested helps!

  16. Jeni says:

Ah Ha!!! Finally, in depth detail… this is exactly what I needed to know. I am going to print this and tape it to the tile above the sink in the bath.

    Thank you very much….

ps: I don’t remember the accident too much, I just remember my friends telling me not to look in the mirror. LOL

  17. Jeni says:

Hi shades, and I forgot to thank you about glad that I am here, after car accident. ( me too )!!!

Where is pynk lately? Have you been chatting with her? I did not notice her on the blog, and I wondered if she was just busy or if she is indeed thinking about no longer blogging. I hope she stays.

I noticed on e-bay all of the MK stuff that is for sale. WOW! Will they ever be able to stop it or will it continue to where all consultants and directors etc, can sell on e-bay? I am kinda confused about the stores on e-bay that continually sell the new and older stuff in online stores. It cuts out the extra person, which is the consultant driving, and actually doing a skin care class. These are the times in which we must make decisions for ourselves, and be true to those around us.

Take Care shades, chat with you later

    Jen

  18. shadesofpink says:

Hi Jeni! You’re a sweetie! I haven’t seen the myst lately. I know sometimes she gets busy and just doesn’t have as much time to blog. I hope she doesn’t take her blog down. I hope she keeps it up because there is a lot of valuable info there that people can benefit from even if she isn’t posting new material.

As for Ebay, it’s probably an issue that will always be there. WE as consultants are not permitted to sell on Ebay. It violates our agreement with Mary Kay. Of course people find ways around it (having a friend or relative sell the MK through their Ebay accounts). I don’t use Ebay. Personally, I’m not a fan of Ebay (regardless of MK). I have been doing just fine selling my products to my customers and holding appointments. ;) What some may not realize is if they purchase MK from Ebay, MKC will not honor the 100% satisfaction guarantee.

We can cut out the driving and skin care class by using our personal websites, too. I prefer to hold appointments. If the person can try it, she will typically buy it. And in the case of our appointments, we are there to make sure they know how to apply the products and to let them know how it will feel, what to expect, etc.

I’m glad the info has helped you. Feel free to ask for advice anytime. I’m here to help. :D

  19. Jeni says:

I agree with you about the e-bay thing however, I do not see, for now, that MK or any other company for that matter, can do anything about it. The personal service is what we are here for, and you cannot get that at all on e-bay.

Even one of the NSD are selling on e-bay. I called her, and she would not answer and then I messaged her, and still she did not answer. She was very nice though. I bought something from her way back when, and at the time I did not know my SD had those items.

Have a great weeks shades. As for me, I have all my baskets ready to go, my sample cards with perfume, lipsticks, glosses and liners. All I have to do tomorrow is get the shrink wrap and use my hair dryer then voila….I am gonna start the blitz on Wednesday. and continue every other day until Feb. 14.

Hope your sales are great this week and for Valentine’s Day.

your sister in Christ and MK, Jen

  20. shadesofpink says:

I don’t think they can stop the Ebay-ing either. All I can do is work my own business according to my signed contract. ;)

Thanks for the well-wishes. I have lots of phone calls to make today. :D Good luck with your “blitz” on Wednesday!

  21. MKLady25 says:

Jenn, as far as the large pore issue goes….Microdermabrasion is incredible for reducing the large pores. MOst of the time the pores are larger due to them harboring dirt and debris on our faces. The mircodermabrasion removes this debris allowing the pores to contract.

As far as eBay goes…my Senior Director instructed all of us to send the links to MK Legal. They will investigate and if the seller is a consultant in direct violation of her agreement - Legal informs them of that AGAIN and tells them that if they continue to sell on ebay, then their ability to purchase MK from the company and be a consultant will be revoked. Although we pay for our products, it is a privilege to be a MK consultant…and those who willfully violate the agreement will have their agreement revoked.

Also - Jane public does not really know how old that stuff is that they say is NIB…maybe it is still in the box, but it is usually FAR from NEW!

The only MK stuff I’ve ever bought on ebay are rings, or a bag that I missed out on because I didn’t get to Seminar, or didn’t quite make Star production…NEVER product!

Soooo, keep up the good work!

  22. kare says:

Not sure where to put this, but I have a question about the new colors coming out the 15th. I’ve gotten a couple of pre-orders, but I’m trying to find out which shades of eye color are matte as opposed to shimmer. I haven’t been able to find it in product knowledge yet. Do any of you (perhaps a director with early ordering privileges) know which of the new eye shades are matte? Specifically, my customer wants to know if Nutmeg and Plum are matte. Thanks! :)

  23. Shades of Pink says:

It’s in the July issue of Applause! :D The eye colors are on page 2 and the cheek colors are on page 4. Check InTouch, too because they have some corrections. Some were mistyped in the magazine. If you haven’t received your July issue yet, it should also be available online on InTouch!

Now, Nutmeg is a lipstick shade (and a discontinued blush shade) and Plum is a discontinued lipstick. There was Plum Dazzle which is a discontinued blush shade is that what you are asking about? If so, Nutmeg was a matte blush shade and Plum Dazzle was pearl (shimmery).

    Matte Eye Shades:

    Coal
    Iris
    Navy Blue
    Raisin
    Sienna
    Silky Caramel
    Sweet Pink
    Sweet Cream
    Cinnabar
    Espresso
    Hazelnut

    Pearl (shimmery) Eye Shades:

    Ivy Garden
    Amber Blaze
    Blue Metal
    Denim Frost
    Chocolate Kiss
    Dusty Lilac
    Golden Olive
    Steel
    Sweet Plum
    Honey Spice
    Lemongrass
    Granite
    Precious Pink
    Moonstone
    Vintage Gold
    Crystalline
    Spun Silk

  24. kare says:

I think Sweet Plum was the eye shadow she was asking about. Not sure what she meant by Nutmeg, now that I’m looking at this! (Blushes). She through it in with questions about Sienna and Navy Blue, and I have not memorized all the soon-to-be-coming eye colors yet! (Blushes again). But thanks for the info! I looked at the product pages on In Touch, but it never occurred to me to check Applause!

  25. lv2tch says:

I’ve been an MK consultant for a couple years–part time, but hoping to grow my business now that I’ve retired from teaching. I have just been reading this page on your blog and I have learned several things. Thanks for the info. I have recently started my own blog–My Daughter’s Wedding–so if anyone out there is experiencing a wedding in the family or know someone who is please visit me at http://www.luv2tch.blogdumps.net.

  26. Karen says:

Okay, super quick question. Can some clarify for me the difference between Advanced Moisture Renewal and Intense Moisturizing Cream? When would you recommend one over the other for a customer?
