Anatomy of a Goal

“People with goals succeed, and those without goals fail. Define your goals. Then write your goals down along with a specific plan for accomplishing them. Break the long-term goal into a series of little goals, each attainable with a specific timeframe. As the saying goes, ‘You can eat an elephant one bite at a time.’” –Mary Kay Ash
For better understanding of goals, let’s break it down. I’m going to use an example. I think it is a good example and everyone should have this particular goal. The numbers can be different. What I am doing is breaking down a Seminar year sales goal into pieces.
I’m going to dissect my Seminar 2009 goal. Here is the breakdown:
My main goal is to reach the Queen’s Court of Sales. For anyone who is not sure what that means, it is selling $36,000 retail in one Seminar year (July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009). So, in twelve months I want to sell $36,000 in product. That is HUGE. That is an “elephant.” So, how do I break that down? It’s relatively simple. I start monthly. If I want to sell $36,000 in one year, that means I want to sell $3,000 each month ($3,000 x 12 = $36,000). Next, I break that monthly goal into a weekly goal. $3,000 per month is $750 per week. Now I want to break that into a daily average goal. I want to sell approximately $100 per day ($107 if you want to get technical and mathematical on me).
That is the GOAL. Those are the destination points. Goals are points on a map. Let’s compare the large sales goal with a cross country road trip from New York City to Los Angeles. It’s 3,000 miles. You can’t do it in one day. It needs to be broken down. You plan your trip with rest stops along the way (daily goals); overnight stops (weekly goals); major landmarks that show you are gaining ground (monthly goals). See the dots?
Let’s go back to the sales goal. This is how your affirmations come into play. The goal is $36,000 in one Seminar year. How do I sell $3,000 in one month? A great start would be 30 faces in 30 days. Do you see how all of these pieces fit together? Fascinating, isn’t it?
Another way to look at $3,000 retail is in product terms. Sell 30 Miracle Sets. Hmmm…30 faces…30 Miracle Sets?
So, let’s look at the faces goal. How many classes does it take to see 30 faces? If you consider that three people equals a class, then it is a good idea to make 10 classes in one month a goal. This means booking 2-3 classes each week. Make 5-10 booking attempts each week to ensure classes.
This leads to your affirmation so that you stay focused on your goal and trick yourself into doing things that are outside of your comfort zone. Trust me, I am working on this as I write! Calling people terrifies me. I don’t know what my problem is, but it does. So, I must talk myself out of the fear and into the mindset that this is something easy for me. (THIS is what is meant by “fake it til you make it”) I am not tricking others. I am playing a mental game with myself to overcome an insecurity. DUH!
So, to stay focused on the goals my affirmation is:
I wake up early each morning and make sure I look my best before I head out the door. You never know who you’ll run into. When someone strikes up a conversation with me based on something related to my business (for example, the woman who complimented my MK TOTE of all things!) I WILL hand her my card! My lunch break is the perfect opportunity to call my leads and schedule appointments. I will not be mistaken for a telemarketer if I am not calling at dinner time the way they do! My attitude is always optimistic and upbeat! My attitude attracts people to me. If someone says “no” it is not about me. It is about the timing or the wrong product or something impersonal like that. I can move on to the next person with confidence. I will not be deflated by someone who is uninterested or rude. That has nothing to do with me. I will not let the negative aspects of my day job pull me down in my personal business. My business will allow me to rise above the stress and drama of the office. Each call I make is a step closer to my goal and freedom from that which holds me back!
I’m sure I’ll change it again. Revision is always good. Can you see how everything is connected?

Shades…Another GREAT POST. I know that you are going to make it. We all need to get over the fear that holds us back from our goals. Like I said before “Fear is something that has not been prayed about”…so with that I am working on my fear of the phone too. You know what I don’t understand is why is that fear there. Why does it bother me so much just to pick up the phone and call. And here is the funny thing when I finally do pick up that phone and call, I usually feel pretty good and confident and to tell you the truth no one has really been rude. So go figure who knows. Anyway I know that you are going to make it. You are doing GREAT with your team members and you are really getting over your fear. I know that we can all do this and we need to so that we can be free financially, and not have to go to the 8-5 everyday. So I know that you can make it and will make it. Oh check out my affirmation I did it and it is kinda long. Tell me what you think. Have a GREAT DAY.
Superb post Shades! I love the way you have broken down your main goal (and compared it with a long trip). I think that view will really help you and many others look at the goal as doable~~which it definitely is!
Your affirmation is great also…. it sets out the vision of HOW you will accomplish the goal and the picture of doing it!
Keep up the great work!
Thanks, ladies!
Bren, I love your affirmation!
SCM, thank you so much! Now if I could get this awful migraine to go away I can get some phone calls made!
The way I have always looked at goals: it is your “map” on how to get where you are going.
It is very much like taking a road trip. If you were going to a certain destination, ie: an amusement park, that you had never visited before, you would not just jump into your car and start driving around, hoping to get there. (or at least most people I know whould not). You would have a map or an atlas, you would have a mapquest print out, or you would have a gps unit to help you get there. Right?
If you get lost, the GPS will recaluculate and get you there, if you get lost you can get the map out and figure out where you are and get back on track to your destination.
This is how I view a goal. If you have a destination you must also have a “map” to get where you are going.
Another great post Shades!
Thanks, mk4me! I have also had directors compare obstacles to a road trip. You know your destination (goal) is California. But what if you get a flat tire? Do you give up and decide you’re not going? NO! You fix the problem and proceed. This is more about the goal in stone and the deadline in sand, but so many analogies to journeys and goals are relevant.
You got it, you fix what is broken. Likewise in our business there will be times when we have to put it on hold and then pick it up later. Could you look at these as traffic lights on our “journey”? The red light has us stopped for awhile and then we go on green?
Guesss there are lots of analogies we could use.
