Got Goals?

This comes a little late in the month, I know. July is the start of the new fiscal year and in MaryKayland, that is also the start of our Seminar contest year. Every year we talk about new goals and getting a fresh start on the new year. In the past I’ll admit it was all fun and games and everything kinda went in one ear and out the other. Yes, I made some goals, but I didn’t see any urgency so I didn’t really go for them. It’s been just about five years since I signed my agreement to take up a new hobby. Back then I just wanted a hobby and didn’t see any reason to pursue my business any further than that. There is nothing wrong with that. I think this is how many if not most consultants get started. I think that is fine. It allows freedom to work how they want. I’m glad for that. These past two years have made me rethink my approach to my hobby and I have decided to work the business aspect more. As I was making this transition I realized, “Hey! It’s July! The new year is just starting. What fabulous timing!” So, I have some very lofty goals.
First of all, have you seen that red purse!? I’m about to have a teenage giddy moment. OK, like, I just have GOT to have that purse! The purse is in the Ruby Star range. This is a huge stretch for me. Sure, I’ve been a Star Consultant before, but never in the Ruby level. Also, it has been a few years since I last achieved Star Status. In order to achieve my red purse goal I must sell $4800 retail by September 15. Good thing it’s still early in July. I want to sell $2000. Monday evening I have a goal session with my director. I hope to get some real feedback for some selling ideas. I think I’m going to see about silent hostesses. I have some other ideas as well. (Sidebar: if I miss the goal I will NOT be charging up products just to get a handbag. The handbag isn’t worth $2400, BUT how cool is it that you just get that free and can use your sales profits to meet your other financial needs!)
Secondly, I want to aim high. I think I will aim for the Court of Sales. This is huge. My friend achieved this in her first year as a consultant. She averaged $2000 retail each month. She did this by taking orders. She only ordered when she sold. She may have started with inventory, but I assure you, she has no debt. Her husband is a financial adviser. I know she did it right all the way. So, I’ll be getting tips from her as well.
Third, as I continue to increase my sales skills and see the results I am sure others will notice, too. When people see me doing fairly well with the sales, they may be intrigued enough to ask me more about it. This is how I believe Mary Kay Ash wanted us to work. Sure, she said pass it on; but that comes after selling the products. I think improving my customer service is a key element in increasing sales. Customer service, by the way, isn’t defined as constantly calling customers for orders. It is packaging the orders to look like gifts; it is asking customers how things are working for them; it is arranging exchanges and returns within a timely manner; it is listening to their preferences and needs. It is building relationships.
Fourth, I do want to earn the use of a career car. My plan is to take the cash this first time around. It is enough to cover my current car payment. My car isn’t that old so I see no reason to have two cars and still pay for this one. I also want to continue making regular payments on it so I pay it off sooner. After paying it off, I plan to be qualifying for the Vue. An SUV will work for me. At that point, I’ll have two cars and no payments. I know my current car will still be running just fine. It’s a Honda.
Finally, I want to transition my full time career to be my business. My goal is to fit this into the course of a year. I figure it’s time. If I miss my goals I am sure it won’t be in vain. I will be further ahead than I am now. Do I expect this to be easy? Absolutely not. Am I a little nervous and scared? You bet! Will I get over it and just get to work? Of course! And I’ll keep my progress posted along the way.
So, what are your goals for the 2008-2009 year?

Stumble It!
What great goals. Good luck–I’m sure you will do well!

Sorry, I must have double-clicked:)
No worries! it happens.
Shades…those are great goals. I am there with you. Maybe we can compare. I know when you are doing it with others for some reason it makes it easier. My goals are to get the booking and selling mastered as you have said. You can make a decent living off of just booking and selling. I too want to earn the use of the car, like you, my Trailblazer is good and I like it so the money will help pay if off earlier. I am going to start calling all of these names that I have.
I am going to go to David’s bridal and see if they have anything coming up and I will ask if I can put a booth in it. I am also going to join the chamber of commerce in our little town.
This is a good time to start it being the start of the new year. So let’s keep up on each others progress.
I too like that red bag. However I to am not going to buy it I am going to sell to get it. I know that this is a GREAT business and I know that it will work if we work it.
Well have a GREAT DAY
One other thing I am reading the new “THE MARY KAY WAY”, and there is a quote in here from Liliana Actis Milanesio de Stettler of Agrentina…”I can not lead people to a place where I have never been.” So this is something that we need to think about. Soif we want a team then we need to show them how to do the work and work it. This is just my opinion however I think it is a good one.
HAVE A GREAT DAY. I am on my way to Kingsville my daughter is at Cheercamp she is the Junior High mascot.
Yes, we can’t lead people where we haven’t been. My director and her senior tell us that all the time.
Have fun!
Great goals Shades! And remember… you can bump up a star level with a qualified ($600 wholesale in the quarter) recruit! So you do Sapphire, recruit one team member (remember the car goal~~you have to have 12 active team members and $18,000 production in the 1-4 months) as qualified and you will have that red purse!
My goals are a little different: requalify for car, again achieve Court of Sales (will be the 10th year), AND do Court of Sharing (that is the HUGE goal for me)…..not to mention Unit Club this year~~we missed for last year by a bit.
Keep your goals in front of you and do a Sales Count Down~~~~ make a thermometer or a chart where you have your sales goal at the top… subtract EACH sale until you hit 000000000! You will have accomplished the goal you set. And you can do it in smaller increments! My director (now my Senior) used to reward $100 days. We had to track our sales and she would enter our names in the drawing quarterly for every $100 day we had! MY goal was to do that every day! (And if I had a $500 day~~it only counted as ONE day)….. So I made myself a wipeoff chart for every day. $100 at the top, $0 at the bottom. Every order, I subtracted from the $100 and when I got to $0, I knew I had hit the goal. There were days that I was $2-3 away and I knew that meant I needed to make JUST ONE MORE CALL~~~ almost always got the order that put me over the top!
Sorry for being so long-winded! My unit doesn’t want to hear my suggestions
Keep it up Shades~ You are AWESOME!!!
Skin Care Mom…Do you have a blog? So how did you achieve court of sales for so many of years in a row?
Shades…Here we come!! I am on the bandwagon with you girl!! I have lots of goals for my MK business. My ultimate goal is to also be able to turn my Mary Kay business into a full time career. It would be an absolute dream come true if I could do that in a year or so…..but we will see.
You know this all boils done to a powerstart everyday!!!!!!!!!! Let’s DO IT!!
I challenge ALL of you Mary Kay girls out there!!!!!!!
Nope… no blog! I try hard to only get on the computer a few times a day~~~ with my business and homeschooling my youngest of 4 and driving the kids to and from school, swim practice, etc and working with my unit I really try to stay off the computer and blip into others’ blogs!
Doing the court……I have a good customer base who are pretty loyal to me! I also really build skin care customers who need to reorder regularly. I keep a full store of products and rarely have anyone wait more than 3-5 days (when I ship to them) for their orders! I also do lots of customer appreciation gifts~~~ and often my customers use me as their gift service. I have one husband who orders from me every gift-giving occasion (and he has at least 1-2 a month with extended family). Last month, he alone ordered $750 in gifts from me! Keeping consistent and following up with EVERY customer is definitely KEY!
You can do it. ; ) I like the whiteboard idea. It keeps you motivated. Good Luck…
Hey Shades, love your goals! Court of sales is really do-able when you break it down, I am sure you have but just in case, Basically you would be looking to sell $2500 monthly, by using the 60/40 spilt, you would be restocking $1500 wholesale a month. $1500 times 12 months is $18,000 wholesale which would of course e $36,000 retail. - But it is a tad easier than that, because any free product you get for example if you do a $400 and you get the product bonus, that $$ amount counts, also the value of your PCP purchase (the currant one is $17.50) these also add into that total. The most interesting thing is when you are focusing on doing enough classes to make this goal, you are also meeting alot of people and it starts making the Court of Sharing look much more realistic, everything boils down to the # of faces you see.
And the saying I use with my unit all the time when they ask me why I do so many classes and facial, “I can not teach what I do not know and I can not lead where I do not go”! so…
Shades, we are all going to be cheering you on!!
Hi everyone! I have been so busy this weekend with my table at the festival! Yesterday we had a lot of rainy moments so I think there were not as many people as there could have been. Today is the last day so hopefully it will stay dry!
SCM, Thank you for your advice! My director also rewards $100 “Grand Days!” Sometimes she does drawings for those as well. $100/day in sales is a good goal for selling. I’m going to focus on that. I have a wipe board goal poster that I need to ask Hubby to please mount on the wall! What’s really cool about it is it’s also magnetic! I can stick pictures on it, too!
MKHeart, I think the blog should be in the background of your business. If you want to focus on Mary Kay, use the blog as a tool for meeting new people, getting ideas, and for customer service. Interaction with live people is the best way to move forward. I use this blog for accountability. I’ve just announced some hefty goals to whomever happens to read this so it helps me to stay on task when I know people are wondering, “what’s she doing and how is she coming along…” ;)I’m also using it as a customer service tool to keep my customer up to date and in the know. Once I get the newsletter stuff figured out that will be another contact I have with them.
MK4ME, thank you so much for that info. I forgot about free stuff counting towards the sales amounts even though it’s free! I also didn’t know that about the PCP GWP. I thought at one time just doing PCP lists was somehow factored in as well. Am I correct? Thank you for your support!
Jenni, I am going to get my goal poster over here tonight!
I think too that I will get the white wipe board and put it up today. I know that this is doable. MK4Me I am going to take your advice too. I think that this is a GREAT business with GREAT products and I have just been lazy. Thanks for all of the advice that you give here. I am thankful that you are willing to share your ideas with us.
Have a GREAT DAY
Oh, if you forward me the information I can create a newsletter for you. Did you want it to mail out or to email or for your blog?
You know what I’ll just ask you when I talk to you later. Duh. Never mind. ; )
Oh it’s ok. I’m going to use a program. I’m first trying Constant contact. They have a free trial. I’m also looking into Aweber. I have a template for a mailer already. Thanks though!
Oh okay. ; )
