For the past week I have been using the Mary Kay® Subtle Tanning Lotion. Unlike the previous Sunless Tanning Lotion, this product shows results after several applications over the course of approximately one week. Now, I happen to be Ivory 104 (Ivory 1 in Mineral Powder). I noticed a difference in a day. It was not nearly as dramatic as the Sunless Tanning Lotion. I just could see it a little on my foot because it’s pale.
After my vacation, I do have a bit of a base tan, but since it has been more like October than May in my neck of the woods I thought I’d experiment with this to prolong my tan. OK, so I also hope to enhance my tan, too; because I tend to not look tan to others when I do in fact have a tan.
Anyway, I digress. Here are my pros and cons in my usual fashion:
Pros
- I love the light fragrance of coconut. I suppose it is probably cocoa butter, but it’s not quite as heavy as most cocoa butter. It has a tropical vacation sort of scent. It’s quite nice. Hubby likes it, too!
- After one week I have a sun kissed glow. I look like I’ve had a chance to site outside in the sun. My coloring is healthy.
- It’s safe for the face. I like this because I tend to protect my face from the sun with SPF 25 or higher.
- Because it is a light formula, you can put clothes on right away. No waiting 25-30 minutes and no risk of staining clothes with the tanning agent.
- Also because it is so subtle, streaks are not an issue. It looks like a suntan.
- It doesn’t look weird on the knees and elbows.
- It’s a nice moisturizer, too.
Cons
- Not many cons, but I do see the potential to look orangy. So far, I don’t, but as I continue to wear it I will observe.
- If you want an immediate sunless tan, this won’t deliver unless you’re pale like me.
As you can see, I really like it. I don’t have much bad to say. I could wear shorts right now and not feel embarrassed about my legs looking too white. They have some color and it’s enhanced by the lotion. That works for me! Let me know your thoughts, too. I always love to read them!

Stumble It!
I may add that to my list! ; ) I need a tan and the stuff I bought last year was horrible. I don’t tan in certain spots due to pigmentation issue. My chest gets spotty and my left arm tans more then my right. Tanning doesn’t work on me but it would be nice to have some color in my cheeks. Since the surgery I look very pale. Scary pale. No pink at all. : (
I love this product!!!! My arms are tanned (from all the time on the pool deck watching my kids swim and compete), but my legs are stark white! With the new Subtle (and yes, it subtle) Tanning Lotion my legs are as tanned as my arms~~~and sunscreen is still a MUST in my household from head to toe!
Do you PROMISE I won’t smell like a chemical bath? If so, I may give this a try. What I hate most about sunless tanning lotions is that horrid smell. I haven’t found one yet that doesn’t have it.
I promise you won’t smell like a chemical bath! LOL The tanning agent is very weak. That is why it takes a week to see dramatic results. I did see results in a day. It smells nice. I think my husband likes it better than some of my perfumes!
I think it smells like summer vacation!
I agree that it does smell like a summer vacation. not that I ever get to take one, but the subtle tanning lotion let’s me pretend like I am on vacation! LOL
OH, me too! I can sit out on my deck in the sun and pretend I’m at a beach house. LOL
My customers love the new sunless tanning lotion. Their comments to me were that it did not smell like a “dead body” like so many of the products they had tried. I was afraid to ask how they knew it smelled like a dead body. Some things are just best left unsaid.
TexasGal, I would also like to know how they knew that.
