It’s Not About You, Really, It Isn’t (Part 2)

This pertains less to networking and more to team building, but the same concept applies. We have to take ourselves out of the picture. In my opinion, the focus should be on how can she benefit from signing a Mary Kay agreement; it should NOT be about the check the company will send and how big it will be. I find that those who are reluctant to build a team often feel some guilt like they are looking for walking paychecks, if my analogy makes any sense. I’ll admit, I felt weird about the whole recruiting thing at first. I joined MK for friendship, activity, and a little extra money. I didn’t even realize that signing up created income for someone else. I had no clue, really. My recruiter is an old friend, so it wasn’t bothersome to me at all and ultimately, I’m glad I did sign under her.
When I’m talking about my MK job to someone, I tell them straightforward how it works. Typically, what happens is a customer will ask me what it’s like to be a consultant and how do I make money. I tell them I make 50% off each sale and I can also earn money by building a team. I tell her that if someone tells me they want to do what I do, they sign an agreement. When my new team member begins selling products and order it from the company, Mary Kay says, “thank you for adding to our sales force” by sending me a check. Then, I simply tell her if she wants to hear more information, I’d be more than happy to have her speak to my director on a call. Some people want to hear more and others don’t. Some people sign up and others don’t. No big deal. Some will, some won’t, so what!
I think it’s important to talk about the team building part of things. If someone is asking me what it’s like to be a consultant and how I like it, I assume she has some interest in the opportunity. I don’t have huge team building experience. In my 4 1/2 years as a consultant, I signed a total of 6 team members. I wasn’t looking for directorship back then. It wasn’t until this summer that I really made a decision that I want to do more with my business. As I move myself up in my business, I will be more than happy to share my experiences, methods, lessons learned, etc. You can bet it will all end up here eventually!
This post marks the end of my NaBloPoMo challenge! I have posted every day in the month of November. I don’t know exactly what the point was, but it was fun and it actually got me thinking and writing and communicating. I thank all who take time to read my little blog and give me feedback.
