Let’s Talk About FEAR

Tonight at my meeting we had a really great discussion about what’s bothering us in our businesses and how to work through those obstacles. To start off, we were asked to make a “Bug List.” This was to be a list of anything bugging us about our business or the business in general. Topics ranged from talking to new people to MK’s “dress code.” The biggest obstacle mentioned by everyone was that big F word: FEAR.
The advice given at meeting was pretty simple: “The best way to overcome fear, is to attach pleasure to the fear.” So what does that mean? How can fear be pleasurable? It’s quite simple. Focus on the pleasure that will result from the fear. If getting on the phone stirs fear in you, think about how making those calls will lead to new bookings and sales. Another thing to do, is make the negative outcome the goal. This goes back to focusing on the no’s. If you want the no’s, that will become the pleasure principle and, therefore, less scary. Also, it was pointed out, the larger your customer base becomes, the more selective you can be with your calls. You will know who you need to call, who likes hosting classes, who likes to reorder, etc. BUT, in order to build one’s business to this size, one must first just do the initial work that at first seems scary.
If you fear talking to new people or have trouble turning conversation with a new acquaintance into a conversation about MK, try asking an existing customer for referrals. Give her some surveys to pass out at her job and offer her incentive; like, “If you could ask women you know at work to fill these out, I’ll give you $1 off your next order for each survey you bring back to me filled out.” Give her a deadline — preferably no more than a week. This is a win/win. She gets free product and you get referrals!
What are your fears in your business? What do you do to overcome them? All ideas are welcome. ![]()

Good post,
Tony Robbins used to teach on The pain and pleasure mo. I applied some of it such as What pain will I have if I don’t do this (like quit smoking) and what pleasure would I derive if I quit or when I quit.
Can be applied to virtually anything.
Thanks Shades for sharing how to do your name on blog. I found it and then thought, Well, it is going to list me as msmkpink when I am not logged in on blog and when logged in and working on Blog I want my name as Angie, so as long as everyone knows that I am not trying to be 2 different people. I think I have shared it on blogs that I post on. My blog states in the about that I do Mk professionally, but blog is just on thoughts, not really our business.
The blog page operates a lot differently from unitnet. Slow process of learning the in’s and outs. How do you get the snapshot to work when you click on your name?
I have a unitnet site for MK gals. and you all do such a wonderful job, didnt feel the need for another Pink site, of course, who knows, I may like it so much when and if I get as good as you all I just might..
Thanks for all you do.
I think Tony Robbins is a good man when it comes to motivation. I like the fact that he mentions “no pain no gain”…I think its not hurting pain its just a natural growing process with obstacles and journeys. Good work Shades.
I am so sorry that my comment is twice. Hope you can delete it..whoo hoo I got a long way to go girlfriends!
Colleen, I got TR tapes a long time ago, I was desperate for the ’secret’ if you will. before I found out there is no secret. lol!
Yes, he is very motivational and his bio is very interesting.
No more double post!
The snapshot feature is activated when you have a URL address attached to your profile screen name. If yours is blank, there will be no snapshot. To check, go to “Update your profile or password” and under “Contact Info” type your website into the “Website” field–be sure to include http:// at the beginning. Feel free to email me if you need more help.

Oh also, to make sure you have snapshot enabled, go to your dashboard and go to “Presentation” then to “Extras” and you can enable or disable snapshot there.
Happy blogging!
Colleen–I like Tony Robbins, too, but I subscribed to his e-newsletter and it’s mostly ads for events he’s doing. Wish I could find more stuff on the web!
Shades, you are a techno babe! THANK YOU! It works! PTL!
Thank you for sharing your email and being so helpful. I nominate you for Ms Go Give of Blogs!
Hi, I am new to Mary Kay and stumbled across your blog and think it’s great. Fear is something I struggle with also. My fear is not of failure, but success! We beat ourselves up so much, we assume we will fail, but what if I succeed and can’t handle it…

Hi Charleen! You make an excellent point–I think there are many people out there who actually fear the expectations of being successful. I even find a little bit of that in myself at times. Love your quote, too!
Angie, glad it worked out for you! I checked out your blog–I saw that last week and was wondering who it was (one of the features on dashboard told me I was added to that blogroll). Now I know!
